Janjira Fort sits proudly on an ovel-shaped rock in the Arabian Sea, near the town of Murud, 165 km south of Mumbai. Due to the shape of the rocky island it is built on, Janjira Fort is an unusual Oval in shape, unlike the regular square or rectangular shape of most forts. Janjira is considered one of the strongest marine forts in India. The Fort is approached by boat from Rajpuri Jetty 5Km south from Murud.
The fort has 19 rounded bastions, some of which are still topped by cannons of native and European make. Now in ruins, the fort in its heyday was a virtually impenetrable, full-fledged living fort with all the necessary facilities. Apart from the main structure itself, there are many carvings, sculptures and features to make this fort a must-see.
